My Apple Pismo powerbook has had occasional boot issues since my
550 G4 processor upgrade, (May 2006,) both kernel panics and frozen boots.

Earlier today, it was working fine, but now I am getting no boot and four
beeps at startup. The sleep light also blinks, after the beeps.

I looked online and saw that the issue could be RAM the boot ROM. I
tried pulling the RAM and that seemed to work, but only for one boot.
Now it is rarely booting versus occasionally not booting.

Do you think that this problem could be relative to the upgrade? What would be the procedure for sending it back to you for diagnostincs and repairs?

Thanks.

The 4 beeps indicate a bad ROM. This normally can happen only when the ROM is unlocked (holding the power key until you hear a tone). It can also happen with power surges.

You can use the link below to return for service. It is under Daystar's extended warranty, which is 50% off labor and 10% off parts. I suggest just sending in for the free diagnostic (normal charge for ROM replacement is $30 for the part and $95 for the labor, before the discount).

Also, you shouldn't have ANY crashes... at least related to the upgrade. We'll check out the general stability fo the system as well.
