What is the MAChSpeed G4 Titanium?

This upgrade is a factory installed CPU upgrade. It uses the latest Freescale CPUs to boost the processing power of your PowerBook G4 Titanium. Daystar's Apple Certified Technicians install this upgrade within Daystar's "state-of-the-art" rework facility located in Buford, GA.

The end result is up to 75% faster speeds.

To date, over 250,000 upgrades have been performed by Daystar.

Is it safe?

Yes. Daystar has upgrades thousands of PowerBooks. the failure rate is less than 1%.

Shipping is secure. We have tested and used every major carrier and settled on FedEx as the premium standard. They have handled packages for years with the least issues and best service.

The process is tested. We employ some of the best technicians in the world. Our BGA specialists have been contracted to train and teach micro techniques throughout the world, including at Japan's largest manufacturers and distributors. Before releasing an upgrade, we run hundreds of tests, and have extened pre-release programs to verify the process and user feedback.

Your system is safe. Our technicians are prohibited from 'browsing' systems. Your PowerBook is kept in a secure area, and is never viewable by other customes. We install dedicated testing applications and do not modify your OS.

I've heard that the Apple System Profiler may not show correct information. Is this correct?

Yes...

The upgraded system runs at the advertised GHz... which can always be verified by opening the testing / CPU utility, XLR8 MAChSpeed Control.

Unlike the CPU speed shown in MAChSpeed Control, the CPU speed shown by Apple System Profiler is simply a number. It does not represent the actual speed of the system (ASP does not check the speed of the CPU at all).

Understanding the reason, requires a little more information though.

All PowerBook G4's have two speeds. You can toggle the settings in Energy Saver under details/options. The two Processor speeds are "Reduced" and "Highest". Apple does this to allow users to extend battery life by running in "Reduced" mode. Apple System Profiler (like TechTool Pro, xBench, etc) does not check and show the true speed of the PowerBook G4. It simply pulls from a pre-configured database which looks at the PowerBook type /configuration, then shows the original speed. Apple does this to hide the fact that the PowerBook G4 actually runs in two different speeds based on the system settings.

MACh Speed Control checks the CPU speed on boot-up and patches Apple System Profiler to show the actual boot speed. PowerBook Titaniums actually boot in low speed, then switch to high speed when Energy Saver loads. As a result ASP (with the patch) will show the boot (reduced) speed. Without MAChSpeed Control, ASP will show the original "out of the box" speed.

For Example... Originally the 867 system runs at:
Reduced: 532 MHz / Highest: 867 MHz.

Upgraded it runs at:
Reduced: 1.0 GHz / Highest: 1.33 GHz.

So, the 1.0 GHz speed that is seen in the Profiler Database is the boot speed of 1.33 GHz. You can see the speed toggle by changing in Energy Saver then opening MAChSpeed Control (it checks the speed each time it is opened). MSC gets this speed by performing a timing test to the CPU/Caches/RAM, like a normal application. It then presents info which is based on the actually responses from the CPU/Caches/RAM.

Are there heat issues?

The upgrade does run warmer than the original. I most cases it actually uses less voltage than before the upgrade. In all cases, even under high ambient temp and high work loads, it is still well under the CPU spec (normally running about 70-75c under load). This is about 20% cooler than a PC lapto, or MacBook Pro.

We recommend the QuickterTek cooling handle with the upgrade. This handle, has the benefit of lifting the back of the unit, providing additional cooling (via its large heat sinking ability), and is convenient for carrying as well. It is also more comfortable for typing with the keyboard tilted.

Are there any particular processing or applicationĀ  incompatibilities or tech problems that have surfaced with this upgrade

No, none. It operates completely transparent to the system. We use a standard CPU used by Apple on newer systems, so, the OS just sees it as a faster version.

How quick is your turn-around for this mod?

Turnaround is normally 48 hours. All systems undergo an overnight test, then we verify thermals and performance before shipping. The addition of drives and RAM can push the upgrade out another 24 hours.

Local customers can drop off. We don't discount the price though... as the shipping is included Free.

Does this type of upgrade historically add to the resale value?

Yes, eBay is a good record of the value increase for upgraded systems.
