OK...where to begin...just upgraded to the G4 550 for Pismo...machine working perfectly prior to upgrade...BUT...with two different HDs same issues...several disk errors mostly hard-locks on transfers under Tiger...regardless of HD used...didn't have these problems using the original processor...and fewer problems using Panther (but alas...cannot sync iPod Classic with Panther)...
Receive errors whenever using MacTheRipper...or ripping an ISO under Tiger but not Panther...
Also have a laundry list of problems trying to use OS9 since upgrading to G4...pretty much OS9 is unusable unless I drop back to the original processor...
Needless to say this is a little maddening as I still use this laptop as a primary machine...

These don't sound like disk errors, or a CPU issue. It does sound like bad RAM. There is an outside chance that the Cache could be the issue.
Drive errors normally manifest with the spinning beach ball first. Not normally hard locks, as the OS is designed to work around component issues. The OS however cannot work around RAM based issues, where the RAM simply misses a response or errors out.
To check the ram. Get memtest. install and run in single user mode. If the RAM passes, then it may be the cache on the upgrade card. The cache can simply enough be tested by booting, then using MAChSpeed control to disable the cache (cache panel, manual, disable). If the system runs perfectly with the cache disabled.. then you have a bad cache, which is covered under warranty.
I suggest sending an email to support@daystartechnology.com to work through the issues. Please allow 24 hours for a response.

WELL...here we are now...I've abandoned Tiger and went back to Panther
and stability returned (welcomed sigh of relief)...
The issues with memory were not there...and I've found OS9 is unusable (unless first disabling ATi Accelerator, ATi Video Accelerator and ATi MPP Manager) after applying 4.1.8f5 firmware patch...any thoughts???
Panther just had a few roo many niggling little faults to live with...like partial freezes (using too many cycles and causing cursor jumpiness) when inserting a disc into the optical drive...for several minutes before settling down...and the occasional hard-lock when trying to access storage medium through USB 2.0 PC-Carbus...under Panther these issues simply do not exist...
For now I've gone to syncing my iPod Classic through a (cringe) Windows Laptop until I have the space to set my FW800 Twin-1.25 up again...irony...the WinTop is a Portege 2010 with an 866 P-IIIM...and is the slower of the two machines these days...LOL...
SO...I guess Tiger is for the FW800 once it gets up and running again...I'm preferring stability to widgets...LOL...although I am kind of missing Safari 3 and some of the additions from Tiger though...
