I have a Powerbook G4 that was originally at 1Ghz. I bought the Daystar 1.92Ghz upgrade a year ago and have been running Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) ever since without a problem.
When I got the Apple Leopard 10.5 disc, I tried to do an OS upgrade. The Mac rebooted off the DVD, but hung up on the gray Apple logo screen with the spinner frozen. I thought the problem was the new DVD drive I had installed, so I put the Mac into target disk mode and installed Leopard from a 1.25Ghz Mini.
Upon reboot, the Powerbook froze at the same point (gray screen, Apple logo) when booting from the internal HD. So I tried booting in Safe Mode to see if that helped. It worked! I got all the way to the login screen and then to my account.
The Powerbook seemed to run normally at first, but then had a flash of garbled screen graphics. That part worried me since I'd never seen that behavior before. I tried rebuilding the permissions and then rebooted out of Safe Mode.
The Powerbook got stuck at the same point when not booting in Safe Mode. I was not able to find any way around this and I even tried a complete erase and install. Still I can't get the Powerbook past the gray Apple logo screen.
So I formated the Powerbook HD and reinstalled Tiger 10.4. I'm giving this computer away to a friend on his birthday and decided that the stable function of Tiger 10.4 was better than running Leopard in Safe Mode. If anyone else is in a similar situation, I'd like to hear if and how you were able to get Leopard to function normally.

Hi Montex,
The getting stuck at the Apple is a symptom of a non-leopard Kernal Extension on Startup Item trying to load. You can go into safe mode, then clean up, or simply do an Archive and install as recommended by Apple. Since a number of Kernel Extensions also load open firmware patches and or PRAM patches, it is strongly recommended that you zap PRAM and reset open firmware, then boot directly to the Leopard Installer disk. You won't have a problem.
To Zap PRAM: (3 zaps / chimes recommended to zap NVRAM too). Hold command-option-p-r after the boot, keep holding for three chimes.
To Reset Open Firmware: After the third zap/chime above, hold down the keys command-option-o-f . This will take you into the open firmware screen. Type reset-all and hit return to reset open firmware and restart.
Then simply hold down the option key to select and boot to the disk.
This does lead to another issue though. Apple's code for checking CPU speed is bad. It actually does not check the speed but uses a database. Man systems with CPU upgrades (like yours) may not work correctly, because Leopard does not understand the speed. The installer will state "that the machine is not supported". You will need to create a patched Installer DVD with a fixed speed check, or order one from us below.
We can ship a patched Installer DVD. This is an exact copy of the Leopard Retail DVD with a repaired speed check for the installer. The Apple Software Agreement does allow this backup copy of the DVD to be created, with certain restrictions. It is not licensed separately from the original DVD.

As it turns out. The easiest way to install Leopard on a slower PowerBook, or Power Mac or upgraded system, is to simply use the free "Leopard Assist" from LowEnd Mac.
