Any comments on whether the XLR8 550 MAChSpeed G4 upgrade for PowerBook Pismo will be compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)? It is my understanding that the minimum CPU requirements for Leopard will be a PowerPC G4.

It really depends on the minimum PowerPC G4 requirements. We are an Apple Developer, and have tested Leopard with our products. We are under non-disclosure, and cannot release our results though.

Rumor sites report that the current requirements for the Leopard developer release are 800 MHz G4. Of course that's simply rumor.. and the pre-release.

It is possible that a third party company could provide hacks to allow users to install on slower machines (like XPOSTFACTO), or users could install on a drive, then move to the slower system... or Apple could add something in Leopard which will check and halt on boot. It's all really up to Apple, and really impossible to know until Apple ships. Any requirements can be changed at the last minute.

A thought though... Apple most likely won't ship any minimum requirments less that what they have had developers test.

Has Apple ever locked-down system software not only to specific architectures (e.g. G4 or greater, or Intel) but also processor speed?

Yes, Aperture, as one example is locked to speed and video chip. Tiger simply looks for G4 and on-board Firewire.

So, have we determined whether Leopard will install and run on a XLR8 550 MAChSpeed G4 for Pismo (even though it is below the 867 MHz cutoff), or is this still a State Secret?

No, it won't.

I suspected that it might not, at least not without the help of a newer version of XPostFacto (if that ever gets released).

Ah well, I guess I'll retire my Pismo and get a new machine once Microsoft Office 2008 is available.

It looks like it may be possible to install Leopard on the G4 Pismo. See these two articles:

these are pretty rough. Using the technique in the first link will still not allow Leopard to install on the older PowerBook systems. The PowerBook Wallstreet, Lombard and Pismo are all listed as "bad systems" in the install checker (along with the iMac and Gossemer)

Leopard installed cleanly on my XLR8 550 MAChSpeed G4 Pismo (1gb RAM). I mounted it in FW disk mode from a PowerBook G4 and ran the install DVD. BTW, an external Leopard-installed external FW drive would not boot the Pismo initially.

Leopard runs smoothly, though a bit sluggish in graphic-intensive spots. Just fine for the basics (Finder, Mail, web, Office, etc.).

As it turns out. The easiest way to install Leopard on a slower PowerBook, or Power Mac or upgraded system, is to simply use the free "Leopard Assist" from LowEnd Mac.

You can download it at: http://daystartechnology.com/leopardassist/
