Dear Sir,
About a week ago, I won a Daystar G4 ZIF 500MHz from Daystar's eBay auction.
Chip arrived, I liked the contents of the packaging, everything's included.
I followed the instructions for removing the ROM block, placed the new chip in the socket, and.......nothing, no boot tone, only fans and drives whirling.
The troubleshooting section of the manual suggested reseating the chip, which I did, and my old 350MHz BW G3 is now a 500MHz G4. Great.
Then trouble started to show in the form of kernel panick during use, or the whole system just hanging there during use. After such a hang, the Mac would refuse to boot again. No boot tone either.
I've tried almost every trick I know-
1.) Stripping the Mac to its barest minimum: no drives, original display card, only 1 stick of RAM, still no boot tone.
2.) Cuda reset doesn't work. I'd hold down the CUDA reset button, but nothing happens. Only in one instance did the Mac reboot successfully with this G4 ZIF in the socket when I hold down the CUDA button.
3.) Put back the original 350MHz G3, and it boots fine. Put back the 500MHz G4, no boot tone.
Without getting past boot, there is less that someone can do to troubleshoot.
My questions to Daystar are:
1.) Is the 200W powersupply of the BW Mac sufficient for the MPC7400?
2.) Why did I get a 7400 when your FAQ section stated that the 7400 is obsolete and that Daystar sells 7410? I was expecting to get the 7410 but got the 7400 instead.
3.) What recourses do I have if this chip just refuses to even get past the boot tone?
I've had many years of experience in assembly of PCs, so I'm familiar with putting in a CPU on a motherboard.
Regards,
Chih-Fong Hsueh

Yes, the power supply is fine.
The fact that you received a 7400 CPU concerns me.
You should have received a 7410 only.
You can set up a warranty repair return at:

Gary,
Thanks for your reply. I have my Daystar order number, which I will not be posting on a public forum, and the exact date of purchase was 2/27/06.
May I ask which of the drop down choices is the right choice for my situation?
I just bought it, so it can't possibly be "No warranty in effect", which of the other 2 options "Daystar Full Warranty - subtract $60" or "Daystar Extended Warranty - subtract $30" is the appropriate one for me?
With regards to the "7400" chip, that's what's printed on the surface of the chip's core, and what the XLR8 Control Panel was showing.
You know, I was attempting to use this upgrade as kind of a foot in the door tactic to get more modern Macs into the household. When my wife's PC got attacked by malware and spyware, she got interested about OSX and Macs being practically virus free.
Well, the BW G3 350MHz was a great machine in its day, but now it just can't keep up with the newer computational & graphics intensive stuff like mp3 & streaming video.
My son gravitated toward the Mac too, so I thought I had my little plan working. Maybe they'll like it so much that they'll each want a new Mac. But too bad, this G4 upgrade only ran stable for a day. The next day, it froze right in the middle of his game, and he was quite frustrated.
I will attend to this when I return from my business trip. There's that one last "flip the lever 4 or 5 times" trick I haven't tried yet.
Regards,
Chih-Fong

I have shipped the chip out to Daystar at noon yesterday (3/31) via USPS Priority mail.
Thanks for your kind support in filling out the repair order over the phone.

Dear Sir,
I received the replacement G4ZIF500 today via FedEx. Thanks! I am very satisfied with Daystar's treatment of my case. You sent out a replacement to me on the same day which you received my return shipment. This is greatly appreciated.
I see that this is a MPC7410 unit. I unplugged the power chord, pressed the power button once, removed the G3-350 and put in this new one, applied Artic Silver 5, carefully clipped on the heatsink, and booted. The Mac booted with the zooong chime on the first try.
Many thanks!
