I recently updated my PBG4 FW800 1.25 stock system with the MACHSpeed G4 Aluminum upgrade to 1.92.  I can't say how much of a performance difference it has made.  Wonderful!

A couple of weeks ago, however, I noticed one my fans making a strange noise.  I took it in to Apple and they went ahead and covered it under my AppleCare.  They ended up replacing one or more of my blower fans.  They also mentioned there was a big gob of heat sink which may have contributed to why my fans were making more noise than normal (from the upgrade?).

Since I have had my system back, it has been repeatedly freezing under high stress (even when plugged in).  For example, I will be running backup software and using iPhoto...it will suddenly freeze.  Another example, I was running an installer from a CD and browsing the web...it froze again.  I have done all the normals...Disk Utility, Repair Permissions, etc.  It is definitely linked to when the temperature gets too high.  I don't remember my temp being this hot before I took it to Apple.

What do you think may be the problem?  I can't do anything now on my computer besides email and light web browsing without it getting too hot and freezing.

Here are the temps it is reporting as I type this with no other apps open:

-CPU Bottom:  143 F
-CPU Top:  143 F
-Battery:  96 F
-Power Supply:  138 F

Doing anything intensive will easily swing the CPU Top temp to 163+ F.  I've noticed when it gets up to this range and the fans are spinning, everything will suddenly freeze.

Help!

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Apple service uses a "cheap" thermal pad which does not allow the CPU to cool correctly. In fact, stock CPUs tend to run warmer than they should in many situations. The idle temp should be down around. 120f

You can fill out a service order at the link below. We'll take care of it for a minimal charge. Actually though. we could have handled the fans for you under your AppleCare warranty... and you wouldn't have had the contining issue.

Until then, your will need go to energy saver and set it to run in Reduced speed mode (Energy Saver / Details / Options). This will keep the CPU draw down and allow the system to run cool enough, without burning up the CPU.

Thanks, Gary.  I figured it had something to do with this.  I should have just sent it to you guys.  :D  I will be sending in my system and hopefully it is a quick fix and minimal charge so I can be back up in operation in no time.

Andrew
