Problem: the other day my son was using the Lombard (running OS 10.2.8). He closed the lid while it was running. It would not restart. At home, on the external power it started right up, but the battery indicator showed no battery even though the battery was in. I checked the battery and only two of the four lights were lit, indicating that it was not fully charged. I restarted on os 9.2.2 and the OS 9 battery indicator showed no battery. I went back to OS 10.2.8. I removed the cd drive on the right side and tried putting the battery in there. It was recognized as being there! I put it back in the left side, left the external power supply on over night and lo and behold, in the morning the battery showed a full charge though the battery indicator on the computer still showed no battery. I removed the external power cord and the computer shut down almost immediately and would not start again till I plugged in the external power cord again. The odd thing is that the battery is being charged, but can't power the computer. Is this something in the hardware or is it something to do with the fact that the laptop was closed up (put to sleep?) while running.
Thanks for any ideas or advice.
Michael

Hi Michael,

With our XLR8 MAChSpeed Control G4 CPU Upgrade, we see a lot of PowerBook G3 Lombards (about 2,000 to date).

This could be due to one of four things: 1.) Corrupted PMU, 2.) Bad Battery, 3.) Bad PMU, 4.) Bad Logic Board.

1.) Corrupted PMU. You can try a reset. First minimize your system. disconnect everyting. Then unplug the AC and battery, and hit the reset button on the back (by the modem connector, marked by a triangle). Reconnect the AC/power and restart. If not working, then you can look at any of the other 2.), 3.), 4.) issues.

The problem at that point, is that you basically will need to do "component isolation testing", which is short for, replace and test with known good parts.

We can do the service. Diagnostic is free with service. You can order a service via the link below:
